Almost anything from Van Halen, wtih David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar, gets me rockin on the bike. Okay, so I’m showing my age here. I’m a 80’s rocker, what can I say?

Okay, the consensus appears to be “just ride”, and I’m down with that.

I’m 38 and officially back on a bike, and the fact that I have dropped almost 10lbs so far is affecting more than just my riding (the wife likes a thinner me, we’ll leave it at that). Still got 30-40 to go, so things are looking up!

But, back to the OS / NS thing. The question was asked where do you draw the line: I’ve heard it said pre-85 is OLD OLD School, but does it really matter? And then there is mid-school, and on and on. But, to answer back about its a way to charge higher prices by everyone collectively collaborating and validating the rarity of an item, well, market conditions affect prices of any item. If you have 30 people that want to buy a 20yr old set of never used Z-Rims, well, there is some value there if they don’t make them any more and you want them. I just paid $31 for a Redline NOS handlebar pad for my early 80’s PL24 cruiser build. Its a rare item and thats what it cost to get it (the last one on ebay went for $50, so I feel lucky at $31).

So, you be the judge, did I overpay because it’s “Old School”?? They don’t make it anymore, so how else was I going to get it?

I got my start in racing thanks to Marty’s Reliable Cycle in Morristown, NJ. He is still there and also has a shop in Roxbury on Rt. 10 West. He doesn’t carry any true BMX race bikes right now, but has a great selection of street / freestyle / dirt bikes. I know he carries S&M, Fit, etc. and a fair amount of parts, upgrades and such. One of his techs, Ryan, knows his BMX stuff and dialed in my ride just recently.

He has two really nice shops now, mtb, road, etc, all the top stuff, but back in the day he worked out of a small store next to a fish market (whew!) and he was one of those “mom & pops” back in the early 80’s that got kids to the Jersey City Armory to start racing. Yeah, he grew from that while the Heller’s stayed small, but it doesn’t make them any less important.

Go check ’em out, and tell ’em Crazy Craig sent ya!

The funny thing is there are 7 figure people out there who do care. I am not trying to grandstand here, but can truly say I can count amongst my friends a couple of 7 figure folks and several high 6 fig folks too, and all of them, HONESTLY, are caring folks that started with ZIP, ZERO, NOTHING, have given freely of themselves and gave back before they made the cash, and continue to do so, and they all have tremendous family lives, they did not sell out. Unfortunately this is the exception and not the norm. So here’s my vote for true compassionate capitalism. There is nothing wrong with making the money if its moral, ethical and legal. Money will always flow to a good ideas properly executed. A main problem in this country is the lack of BASIC financial literacy. You’re right, $85,000 is more than enough if you got your financial house in order and are not leveraged to the hilt. Its like when people are “shocked” that you can lose weight by eating less and excercising more. Fix your finances by spending less and saving & investing more. Shocker!

I know what those are, but the parents had those, not me. They got pics & movies of me as a kid with those. But who says 38 is old? I’ll be racing this year, so we’ll see.

I guess its time to take off the 8-track player I’ve had duct taped to my bars. It was getting in the way anyhow. 😉

You are OLD school if you know what an 8-track player is.

Yes, there is always going to be the new school / old school thing. I don’t think it can be avoided. This is the only way to explain it sometimes. Otherwise, you can’t necesarily appreciate the love for an old Redline, etc.

I have one complete 2004 Redline Flight 24 (not completely stock anymore), and am building two other projects, maybe three. The easiest way to explain it is one is a new school build, the other is a (true) old school build (my early 80’s Redline PL24). Once you say that people can appreciate what you’re doing.

At least thats how I feel.

But, like Adam said, as long as it doesn’t break, it works for me.

Kmart – I just got back on a cruiser after 16 years and would like to have a chance at winning, so go easy on all these old names, they might want to come back and race! 😀

Oh, I forgot, Farside is back, so I’d like to have a chance at second. But…watch out Rich, I’ll be trying my hardest!

Just kidding, of course, I actually would love to see all these guys. These are the guys I used to mix it up with!

Dude, yer bringin back some good memories…and Oingo Boingo rocked.

That was a fast build on the Hutch, you rocked it! Hate to say it, I actually don’t remember everything. We got a nice write up by the ABA for that weekend. I still have the clipping from the ABA rag.

Whoever is reading this, to comment about Garrett Mountain, try and picture this: Mr. PJTaft himself flying across a parking lot, he bunny hops the curb, but does not see the massive puddle “hiding” in the grass. His bike “sticks” the landing, and I mean sticks. It stopped in like 6 inches of unseen mud. PJTaft does a full OTB and lands full out, flat on his back in the puddle. All that was missing was a surfboard to hang ten on the wave that followed.

We gotta go back man! Any other No. Jersey crew out there? Share some stories, love to hear ’em!

Now that aint right man. Whoever finds the perps, you can use my truck and bumper to … you get the picture.

No promises, but is there any particular scheduled days they’ll be working at the track? They need materials of any sort? More than happy to make a trip to the Home Depot if needed!
