Ant – first – at that age I would sign them up as Rookies, not Novices. Better chance of racing in class believe it or not (or at least their age), and also better chance they won’t get combined.
Make sure they understand that racing each other is good, but explain to them the rules and track etiquette that ALL racers must abide by, and if they don’t, they will not be allowed to race. I would recommend you introduce them to one of the older riders, or better yet one of the officials and let them explain it to them as well, this way you are not the bad guy if they get thrown off the track for trying to take each other out.
Hopefully they will understand they are not the only riders on the track and they have to race safely.

Craig..Pete..Bill…..
What’s our north jersey status?I thought Bill already built a practice track behind his house. 😀 😀
To be honest, no status, but since we all had the collective BFO (blinding flash of the obvious) about practice tracks, its been in my mind and I am curious to see how you and Jim (the guinea pigs) make out two weeks from now. Even though the ABA is not officially here, anything Bill Curtin might be able to throw our way? That would raise the ABA’s stock here a little. We all know how much help we’re gonna get from the NBL on this, even though they (at least as of now) will benefit in the long run from our efforts.
CrazyCraigMemberBMX901 –
I’m on your side, honest. If you read the last sentence of my post, I say that there is no harm in looking at where our money is going and how to get the best bang for the buck.
That’s why Brett keeps beating the drum: get involved, come to meetings, make some noise.
And up until now, I don’t think there are any riders officially on the board. And, although I personally have a lot of respect for everyone on the board right now, this is what is missing: rider input and representation. Brett has been saying that ALL year long.

Craig make up your mind what side of the fence you want to be on. That’s all.
Lets just say this, I have no intention of being a Novice in 2007. I will not be a career novice. I have not made any other decisions beyond that yet. I have other issues to deal with outside of racing that will impact what I do and when.
CrazyCraigMemberLike I said in a previous post, I am becoming the live case study, and if nothing else, helping us uncover some interesting poop about move-ups and career rookies, etc.
I decided to email the NBL asking why they are saying I get no move-ups even though my two first place finishes at a Nat and a Regional both qualify by the rules, assuming I am not misinterpreting them.
I will keep you posted. I can’t wait to hear the answer.

901, it’s like the rest of life, we get less and lees for our money every year, but like in life we have a vote. MESSAGE , make your vote count
Ditto to what Bill said. Its called inflation. I believe those in charge do their best to keep the fees as reasonable as possible, but everything else gets more expensive every year. Heck, look at the price of gas & oil, don’t you think that makes everything else more expensive?
My suggestion is this: if you really love BMX and understand economics, then in order to keep racing, you in your own life have to figure out how to earn more money to afford the things you want to do (more importantly learn how to keep and save more). I know us adults with houses and families understand that all too well, and to make sure my racing did not have an ill effect on my budget, I cut out alot of non-essential things this year (many less trips to Dunkin Donuts & 7-11 for coffee). I found other ways to pay for my racing as well.
At the risk of sounding like Tony Robbins, you make your own way in this world and nothing is impossible. You do whatever it takes to get it done.
Still, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t look at every possible way to get the most out of our race fees. Like everyone here is saying: get involved. Things will not change in one meeting. It takes time and commitment.
CrazyCraigMemberC’mon Paul, you know what I am referring to. Remember, I am the only NJ 35+ Nov that went to the Grands this year, and the 35X racing at that level is a whole different ballgame. The priorities I am referring to is making sure I can go to work on Monday to support the wife and kids.
If I was only racing locals, then its a whole different story. Believe me, when I came back this year, I had no expectations of doing well at all. I was just happy to be back on a bike. But, I got “hooked” again, and since I do not know what activities my 5-1/2yr old son will be involved in next year, I went for it as best as I could. I hope he gets into BMX, but right now he is not leaning that way. My 2-1/2yr old daughter seems to be more into racing than he is.
Now, do y’all want a really good laugh?
I emailed the NBL for a move-up points audit to see just how close I am to the 20 points, but not that I feel I have to wait for that. You know what they said? I only have 5 move-up points from locals, none from the Nats or Regionals.
I went 2-4-1 and won the main at Howell and went 2-1-1 and won the main at Trumbull, and they say I get ZERO move-ups for that. WTF?
I should at least have 9 move-ups (2pts for 1st at a Nat with at least 2 other 35 Novs in the main), but thought I had more than that from locals, but not by how they score it. I guess you have to “perfect” at a Nat to get a move-up?????
And we wonder how Rookies and Novs stay there FOR-EVER. Now we know. The freakin NBL allows them too VERY easily.
Don’t worry, I am not going to wait until I have 20 move-ups.

God knows what crud will come out when they stick that needle in me 😯
Instead of a needle maybe they should use a keg tap?
CrazyCraigMemberJess, just be glad you dont turn 35 until late next year. I WILL remember this. 👿
I have to admit, that’s actually quite funny.
CrazyCraigMemberBilly, you made your choice, I made mine. But, I hope your back is feeling better.
But, I don’t get the school joke. Yer not saying I belong on the small bus now, are you?? 😕
CrazyCraigMemberYeah, I know its mostly fun, and it makes for good talk at the track, and we need some of that. People love soap opera, right?
35X is gonna be fun for sure. 😯
CrazyCraigMemberWaretown: No, this is not Brigantine, they are no where near each other. I raced Waretown as a 14 Nov in 1982. It was on Rt. 9 South just below the Oyster Creek Nuclear Power Plant. One town south of Forked River. It was behind a shopping center and supported by the bike shop that was there, I just do not remember the name. I don’t think it survived into or past 1983. We got a lot of rain in 1983 and it pretty much washed the track out.
Toms River: Also an ABA track. It was on the north end of Toms River, almost in Brick. It was part of a family entertainment complex that had miniature golf, arcades, batting cages, etc. It raced on a weird schedule to get riders (aka point chasers). I remember several times racing Deptford and/or the Philly indoor warehouse track and then heading over there for a night race on the weekend.
CrazyCraigMemberWe gotta bring the gang out for another midnight game of foot-down!
Its been a blast Greg, hope everyone is doing well and looking forward to seeing you again at some point.
CrazyCraigMemberI’m not braggin about it. Yes, I DO get what everyone is saying.
Its one thing when you are a 14yr old movin up and being 39 and coming back. Different set of priorities.
I’m just trying to point out that I have not sandbagged my way to where I am at in the standings, etc. I worked my butt off to qualify for the state champ race, the Grands and now the Regional Championship coming up. In other words, I know whether I turn up voluntarily or not, I’m gonna be expert soon enough. I want to be expert. If not, I would have sandbagged. But its MY decision, nobody elses.
But, y’all seem to think you know whats best for me, when its me out there on the track, not you. I am playing by the rules and have never held back in a race, I race hard and to win everytime. But y’all seem to think its okay to rip me about it instead of maybe saying “hey, wow, Craig’s doing all right for an out-of-shape desk jockey coming back into a sport he hadn’t participated in for almost 17 years”. Yes, to many of you, if I have done what I have done in a relatively short period of time, then yes, that validates what everyone is saying. It tells me when I make the decision to turn expert, that I can feel confident in my ability to compete and learn at the next level.
But c’mon guys, I gotta believe we all have waaaay more important stuff to worry about in our lives than debating if Craig should turn expert. Sheesh!
CrazyCraigMemberHappy Birthday Pete!!
