For those of you who’ve never seen an ABA race before, special things to take notice of are:

The race starts on time! Not an hour late.

A quickly run race with two motos on the track at all times.

Very professional looking banners throughout the infield

240 motos which I believe is much bigger than any regular NBL national this year. (and that’s while going against the NBL Grands no less)

That woman sitting at the finish line, Jen, who SINGLE-HANDEDLY scores every ABA national moto. That probably adds up to between 40 to 60 thousand motos a year. She probably scored around 2000 motos this weekend alone.

Isn’t it amazing what the ABA can do with a few, competent, paid people?

As a matter of fact, is that Brett Snyder in the Fox -John Deere colors on the gate and Matt Kelty in the Olish Farms jersey behind the gate?

The caption says over 2500 competitors. With a full gate (or at least the NBL’s version of a full gate) of six riders thats around 420 motos. If the average moto has 5 riders that’s 500 motos. How many motos were there?

Okay I just saw. 453 motos. I’m actually impressed.

Wasn’t that the sanction that held their first national and tried to draw the pros with a big purse so the ABA quick threw together a few local races in So Cal with a big purse to keep the pros from going and squash the new sanction?

This is what is disgusting about the sanctions. Instead of trying to bring new riders in they’re just competing for the ones that already exist. That’s why the first thing BMX needs in order to get anywhere is ONE sanction in the U.S. but that’s a whole other topic. Besides, the two sanctions are such bitter enemies they will probably fight any attempt to combine to the bitter end.

All the same I think the ABA is the better sanction to go with right now.

I’ll be at the meeting on the 9th.

I just might give it to Jeremy Smith every week. That little guy is the shizz! That’s the kind of effort I like to see. We need more guys like Jeremy Smith. Oh yeah, and more cavewomen. Happy, Bill?

Wow, it’s everyone jump on the Caveman day. I feel the love 🙂

Debbie, don’t you worry about it. The Caveman found time to ride 25 miles on Friday, 53 miles yesterday and do legs in the gym today. Once my shoulder is better it’s back to sprints.

Well, I don’t announce at Flemington so I don’t know that I’d do it there. I figure the announcer watches all the races and has all the names right in front of him on the moto sheets so he’d be the best person to make the call. I’m not copyrighting this. Anybody that wants to can use it.

Oh and here’s another rider that won’t ever get it. Danny. He’ll have to beat me to get it. Which means he ain’t getting it. Ha!

    What the?!??!

I’m away for two days and what happens?
And what got into Farside? He’s just upset cause I didn’t give it to him or Taylor. 🙂
I can’t wait till Jesse sees this. 🙄

For those of you that don’t know, I’ve been announcing for 18 years and this idea finally came to me. Perhaps in a dream, or while signing autographs, or perhaps it was a dream I was signing autographs.

Other sports like baseball award an MVP of the game award for the best performance of the game. Why not for BMX? I thought of having a racer of the day award at every race. An award (perhaps in name only) for one rider that impressed me the most. And no, that doesn’t mean I’d give it to Sarah Welsh every single week, even when she’s not there. 🙂 Sorry Janeen. 🙂

The hope is that it would inspire racers to try harder each and every time they’re out there, make people care about local races again and perhaps increase the level of competition here in NJ.

What would I look for in giving the award? Beating riders older or higher proficiency than yourself, girls beating boys, come from behind wins, drag races down the last straight to a close finish, killer passes in a turn, dominating all three motos and main, skills, speed, bribes, etc.

I’m still hashing out the details as to what to call it, how to make it meaningful, should we give an award like Brett’s sticker. (let’s hold off on that for now) Perhaps it will come to me in another dream.

I figure anouncing gives you a good vantage point to give the award. Anyone is free to use the idea. I’ll probably do it wherever I announce. Who knows? Perhaps this will become a new standard in BMX. It’s the perfect thing for a sponsor to attach their name to, like “Hyper’s racer of the day award” at nationals.

All I know is Farside ain’t ever getting it. 😛

OK, you are both on my list! And I don’t have stitches anymore. I took them out yesterday. By myself! With rusty scissors! I’m tough like that 🙂

Where were we? Oh yeah, ABA tracks in NJ. Rock on!

PA!?!?!? How long have you known me?
    Camden County for 36 years.

I ain’t afraid of Danny. 😈 I don’t think I’ve ever raced him. Once my shoulder gets better I’ll come up to Flemington and we’ll see whose Road Kill is faster. 😈

Ant, you gotta simmer down with these rumors. Eric Rupe kept Farside from going to Brazil, somebody got kicked out of the state meeting for asking about the money, John F Kennedy was a vampire, Caveman’s on roids. All nonsense. Nonsense I tells ya!

Ask the treasurer where the money goes. I’ll bet a lot goes to jerseys for the President’s Cup.

I’m tempted to put a track right next to the Cape May lighthouse if it will piss of Debbie. Heh, heh. Or perhaps Salem. 🙂

This is a subject that I’ve been thinking about a LOT this year. If you’ve raced both sanctions there is no question when it comes to organization, competence and professionalism the ABA is miles ahead of the NBL. But when it comes to having a vision for the growth of BMX both sanctions are the same. Abysmal.

Neither sanction advertises to world outside BMX that I know of. Neither is actively trying to bring new people in. They simply rely on word of mouth and people stumbling across BMX tracks to keep BMX going.

They both advertise in Colin Stiles’ Transit Videos. Wow, advertising BMX to BMXers! Brilliant! They’re not trying to bring new riders in, they’re just competing with each other for market share. Then the ABA advertises in BMX Plus magazine with an ad that basically insults their readers. Then they have another ad that says, “tired of the same old stick and ball sports?” That’s obviously a dig at baseball only once again it’s in a BMX magazine. Do you think they reached any baseball players with that one? I could go on for hours but I’ll stop now.

The NBL’s bring a buddy campaign is a step in the right direction and we’ll see what will come of the ABA’s decision to hire Brad Fanshaw as their marketer. Hopefully he has some vision.
