Sounds to me like something similar to lobbyist groups and the “moral majority”. Loud people in politics who claim to speak for the majority but they do not.
The internet scares the hell out of those in the media. There is no way to control the public distribution of peoples thoughts. The same thing was said of Guttenberg all those years ago when he invented the printing press.
The ability for people to express thoughts and opinions freely and openly in a public area will always rattle those in charge.
Anyone ever read Common Sense?
