ABA BMX Goes “BIG” in Las Vegas!
    by Shannon Gillette

The American Bicycle Association hosted its 3rd largest National event of its 30 year history in Las Vegas, NV at the South Point Hotel and Casino this past weekend July 13-15. Las Vegas, NV proved to be a must attend event with over 5000 participants and 16,000 spectators over the three day event, which represented riders from 38 states and 9 different countries. Friday’s event was a record setting pre race event with almost 1000 participants and 157 motos, Saturday was the third largest ABA National event ever held with 378 motos and 2438 participants, and then Sundays event was 351 motos with over 2300 participants.

With BMX entering the World Stage at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing China, the Las Vegas National drew international riders from around the world. Riders from New Zealand, Costa Rica, Mexico, South Africa, Chile, Canada, Japan, Argentina, and the entire Australian Olympic BMX team were all in attendance. The vast attendance by US and International riders earned the event the front page spot on Sunday’s Las Vegas Review journal.

Executives from Disney were on hand to witness the event first hand and inform everyone about the Disney Cup Fall Nationals that will be hosted at the Disney Wide World of Sports October 25-28 2007. Executives from Bawls Energy Drink were also in attendance. The Rush HD Network was their filming “Motivatedâ€ÂÂ￾ a 1 hour documentary on Bubba Harris, ABA’s National #1 Pro for the third year in a row.

The South Point Casino was an excellent host for this event, with the Hotel being directly connected to the arena it allowed participants and family members the opportunity to see a movie, play games in the arcade or go swimming or bowling in between races. The South Point Casino played a major role in exposing the sport to the general public as well, with a video playing on the billboard in front of the casino and Event posters through out the Hotel drew in spectators that otherwise would have never been exposed to the sport.
The ABA would like to thank all the participants, families, teams, sponsors, and BMX industry for helping make the Las Vegas event such a uge success!
