our tent was right behind the pro section this yr so we got to witness almost every crash that occurred- not pretty… but many of the crashes were in the 2nd straight where a few months ago they took out a double and made it more “do-able” this yr so to speak….if you raced in control you didnt have a problem although the last jump( hip) was angled a little strange if you had too much speed it threw you into the turn…many a crash there as well….
i dont know why everyone is allowed to do the pro side now. i also remember back when pro sections were for “pros only”… hey does anyone remember back when cj had a “7 and over” section..haha yup if you were 6 and under you had to stay to the left of the cones..that was for the “older riders”…. too dangerous for the little racers and i think it was only a step up or a table top not even a deep double!! boy those were the days!!
bmxmom156Memberbob t had no choice but to cut back sat to 2 moto transfer. the hospital director of emergency services called the county and complained that they had 2 riders life- flighted in 15-20 mins and they refused to take any more patients from the race…. this is first hand info not hearsay….they asked for it to be shut down…. so the county officials w/mayer went directly to the track to tell bt to shut it down right away. if bt didnt do something the race would have been cancelled. so he changed to 2 moto transfer( less chance of crashes) and promised to “tune down” the 2nd straight( they just filled it in a little and kind of pretended to change the lip on that one jump).
we were camping next to the pa state commis and this was the word from the track director as to why that was done. so either race 2 motos or none at all. they also said there is a 99.9% chance that this event will not be at the same location next year or any year for that matter.( accd to the county officials)
bmxmom156Memberanother thought…. just from experience to parents out there who tend to push their kids( i used to do this so i can call you out if you are one of them)
we went to pittsburg race( against my best judgement) being my son only had 1 nat under his belt since his surgery….. so i was outvoted and we went…left early enough to get in as much practice to make sure he could “dial in” before the race. as far as the 2nd straight and pro jump goes riders have to race within their ability…regardless of the “adrenalin rush” or whatever pushes them to do things they dont have the ability to do… but the parents pushing the kids to jump the pro( i heard it over and over) because “everyone else in their class it doing it” is just plain stupid. i had the same thoughts when after the 1st day my son ( who is 16)didnt jump it… he had enough sense to decide on his own he could get past that section faster with less chance of crashing by not jumping it… so i am thinking WHAT?? as i watch some 14 yr olds clear it…then some did not… then all the bikes started splitting in 2( from the ones who thought they could clear it and only 50/50 the landing i think i stopped counting at 6)….the more i keep my mouth shut the more i learn… even after 11 yrs in this sport i have to remember the rider has to decide not the parent/ or peer pressure or whatever.. some riders did get hurt and i saw both of the bad ones… after watching the older fellow land and twitching from the waist down as they had him on the stretcher i thought to myself i was glad my son didnt try to jump it…. even if he was one of the few kids his age who didnt do it…. he did make his main on sat and he was happy… all in one piece and i was very proud of him for making the right decision this time. maybe another race or different circumstances he would have jumped it but for some reason he chose not to do it and we as parents have to accept that.
on friday during practice in the 14over there were parents standing on the fence in front of our tent who were screaming at thier kids who didnt jump the pro…. i watched a kid in dans moto who crashed 3 times and still raced(although not to his potential due to injuries) kids were yelling “jump it” to their friends and some were trying to jump it who had no business even attempting it.
anyway my point is as a parent sometimes we have to leave the riding to the rider and accept the fact that they are on the bike not us and unless its the opposite situation( dangerous with no common sence) we need to think twice before pushing our kids past their ability.
btw the other 17 yr old who had the bad crash…when he hit the ground in the 2nd straight his helmet flew off so hard and far i dont think he had it strapped on at all.. dave made several announcements about this as it happened over and over. riders didnt have thier helmets strapped and i feel that contributed to the injuries big time…when the mayor/county officials and police showed up before they “changed the 2nd straight” i think that parents and riders started to re-think their riding style and have more common sence when racing… jmo
bmxmom156Memberwe are camping- also there is a paid practice($10) thurs 6-9pm in case anyone didnt catch that…geesh they must be expecting a real big crowd to have an extra practice the day before…(is that the norm for them every year?- we havent been there in 8 yrs)

June 15, 2006 at 8:36 pm in reply to: ok what does everyone think about the new slingshot rule? #31609bmxmom156Memberthe other thing i forgot to mention- does 1 rider w/slingshot gate affect the other riders that dont?
case example… a few weeks ago at a state race an older( sorry guys..) rider who was in the money open was overheard saying that so and so ( who will remain nameless) threw him off when he started his slingshot and it moved/bounced the gate( forget the words he used) so i guess it can affect the other riders concentration somehow… ??
interesting to say the least…. i seriously never noticed it till this yr when now it seems like most of the faster riders are all doing it.
would love to know if the top 3 winners in the16/over opens at nationals slingshot or snap??
who can find this out? can you do a poll on it somehow?
bmxmom156Membercan someone post how the challenge classes actually qualify for 07 worlds? i have gotten so many different explainations to having to “earn” a point by making a semi at one of the “specified” races to just ending up with national #16 or better.
does anyone know for sure???
thanks
why must they make it difficult?
June 15, 2006 at 6:15 pm in reply to: ok what does everyone think about the new slingshot rule? #31600bmxmom156Memberdont agree with the random gate thng either. it seems they should make up their mind and stick with one thing( both sanctions plus uci)
see nebmxnews.com/phpBB/ there are some older guys who used to race when this rule was in effect. some interesting comments as well…
do they decide on these things at competition congress? or is it just the powers that be who decide? just curious if this is a voted on issue or just “here it is now we will allow this” all of a sudden… i remember when it was against the rules the person who ran gates wouldnt enforce it anyway- it seems too subjective- prob just easier to get rid of the rule…
bmxmom156Membernames on the gate is a great idea. they used to do it all the time… now it seems even at the regionals everyone is in a hurry and its forgotten… even in the mains… how can you announce if they have the race before finishing up and 1/2 way thru they drop the next gate?? they would have to wait till the main in front is done first and apparently they dont like to do that anymore ( ex cept for the pros)
June 15, 2006 at 2:46 pm in reply to: ok what does everyone think about the new slingshot rule? #31568bmxmom156Memberso if you are a person who likes to use the lights for gates will this affect you at all? seems like this may be the only wat to stay consistant and not have to change if you use lights now it will be ok if they change it?
am i understanding this correctly?( seems confusing to me)bmxmom156Memberlike the podium idea… imagine those little guys with their trophies standing up there…it would even spark folks to buy more pictures which is good for the picture guy at any track as well…. it wouldnt be that hard to make i would think someone with some wood-working skills could make one??( i am dangerous with a knife cutting a bagel so dont even suggest it..haha)
i agree we may have missed the boat in the past but with all this enthusiasm and new ideas it can only get better…
my sons worlds podium shot and trophy ( even though it was back when he was 11) is his most coveted posession- 5 yrs later it still sits there on the table and nothing crowds it…haha
June 15, 2006 at 1:44 am in reply to: What advice would you give to a new volunteer at a BMX race? #31559bmxmom156Memberi like janeens #5
bmxmom156Memberok lets try this again..
IT WILL BE DRY TOMORROW!! i put my request in for no rain…
will there be gate practice tomorrow 6/14 at flemington??
bmxmom156Memberno cant say i use that one but we got the monster i carplay wireless fm transmitter and let me tell you it is awesome!! no dead spots at all. it has 4 channels and i can honestly say maybe 1 time we couldnt tune in…. someplace up near the city…
if you just got it and dont like it i would return it and get this one. my son wanted one and i looked at a few others and went to a few internet sites (including the apple site where people give opinions i forget the name of it) anyway there were the least amt of complaints about this one so we got it. we dont go anywhere without it in the car.
i think it was around $60 at bestbuy maybe you can find it cheaper . have had it for 2 yrs works perfect no problems so far.
